How To Find The Best Student Bank Account - Avoid The Gimmicks

3 Good Student Banks Accounts

The Halifax Student Current Account
  • Not many gimmicks which itself is actually promising -
  • 10% discount on Travel insurance (but this is likely to be overpriced anyway) get a quote from them anyway if you're interested
  • 25% off a year's AA membership
  • A flat rate £2,750 interest free overdraft per year which is outstanding, it blows away the competition
  • The usual debit card and offers of credit card etc, internet banking as well
  • 24.2% interest rate charged if you go above the £2,750 interest free overdraft - this rate is not good but the large initial overdraft level should be more than enough for most students especially when you see what the other banks are offering
  • Halifax student account
Lloyds TSB’s Student Bank Account
  • First the signup gimmicks which aren’t actually that bad
  • Free iPod shuffle worth about £50
  • 1 year’s free Youth Hostel Association (YHA) membership worth about £10
  • Lloyds don’t offer a tiered interest free overdraft rather a flat £1,500 each year for 3 years (if the course lasts longer than 3 years they’ll up the overdraft level to £2,000 in year 4 )
  • If you breach these limits but agree an overdraft extension (unlikely) the interest rate will be 7.4%
  • Without this agreement the interest charged shoots up to a crazy, incredibly expensive and quite frankly offensive 29.9% (plus just to rub it is a fee of £30 a day, maximum £90 a month)
  • Debit card, option a credit card and interest banking facility etc
