10 Important Points You Must Know About Gap Year Insurance

  • Make sure you have a copy of the insurance policy (also write down the policy number and helpline telephone number separately) and your parents have copies as well. It's also a good idea to swap photocopies with any friends you're travelling with
  • If you are going to claim against anything then all tickets, receipts and other pieces of proof must be kept. One idea is to post any relevant information home so you can’t lose it
  • When sorting through different policies and quotes the most important thing is to look for medical cover (£5 million cover is more than enough though) and not how much your personal possessions will be insured for although this is still relevant
  • It’s tempting to try and make up a claim (iPod and camera were stolen) but you can bet that the insurance companies have heard it all before and know all the tricks so play it straight and don’t try and get ‘too clever’ - cheating an insurance company is a criminal offence
  • On an unrelated matter but a very useful tip - When it comes to money and withdrawing it from ATM machines consider opening an account with The Nationwide because not only do they offer excellent exchange rates but they charge no transaction fees which can save literally hundreds of pounds over the course of several months/a year
      • Also note that there's a new (legal scam) going on with credit/debit cards when trying to pay for things abroad, the shop/hotel/restaurant will often give you the chance to pay in two currencies, Sterling or that countries currency
      • ALWAYS opt to pay in the local currency otherwise you'll get hit with nasty charges
      • And if the place says the 'machine is broken' and you can only pay in Sterling then 99% of the time it's rubbish, they're just trying to pull a fast one (this is because they'll receive part of the commission if paying in Sterling)
